Auditorium Theater Seating Design Guidelines

By Richard Moore

An entertainment hall contributes to the performance experience greatly. The chair arrangement goes a long way in ensuring the audience has a good connectivity with whatever is on the stage. One form of arrangement is multiple aisle. This is basically according to every row two aisles. The other commonly used form is the continental which just one big mass of hairs in the middle of the room. Whichever form is used for auditorium theater seating, it must serve the audience well.

Ever wonder why some theaters have a curved design while others are just straight? Well, the reason is the floor construction. If the chair arrangement does not conform to the floor construction, the comfort of the patrons will be compromised. The audience will have an obstructed view. The audience is the sole reason for putting so much work and thought into the design process.

Before engaging the idea of designing a space, there is the need for an abstract idea or vision. How many units would be required for the space to achieve optimal function? How long should the project take? How much time would be convenient for the establishment? Pick a good chair model. Ensure to consider the ergonomic aspects before deciding on a chair.

The chairs will usually come with accessories. The choice of accessories is determined first and foremost by the budget. Accessories are not really necessary, they only work to enhance the experience in the hall. The list is extensive with cup holders, aisle lighting, swivel tables, electrical outlets, reclining abilities or even lumbar support. Come to think of it, some of the accessories are almost necessary lie the aisle lighting and lumbar support.

During the performances that are most likely held in such establishments, the audience members like comfort first. They also like to be connected to the performance. The people will also appreciate unobstructed visibility. This means that the arrangement should be on a slope though only slightly.

After thinking about the designs and chair choices, legal considerations come up next. There are legal codes that specify row spacing and clear passage. There is also need to think about emergencies like fire or threat. There needs to be a chance for the patrons to all get out safely. That means adequate exits and proper safety guidelines in place. There should also be the accessibility for the disabled people.

It is best to get a professional to help outwit the decision-making process. There are many decisions to make. It is easy o ignore the legal restrictions when one is only a proprietor who seeks to make their vision come alive. A professional will be at hand to knock down a peg when the design gets too ambitious or too outside the lines of legal and safe.

Remember that the sole reason for designing the hall is to enhance the relationship between the stage and the audience. The patrons need to have great vertical and horizontal visibility.
