Making A Feature Of Contemporary Art Displays

By Karen Fisher

Everyone has a different view of what they like and dislike about art and because of this, what looks good in a gallery, might not look good in your living room. Each person's particular taste in contemporary art displays is open to criticism by another as tastes differ dramatically when it comes to paintings and sculpture.

A warm touch is to use photographs that have been passed down through generations in your own family. Even if you have photos that are water damaged, or torn, there are likely to be several people that can offer the service to repair and touch up your precious photographs. The pictures can be reprinted after repair to make them look new.

Use the area of wall in your casual living room to create a wall of photographs that will tie the decor together and make the room feel more homely. You will need to start planning the layout ahead as once the frames are fitted they should be complementary to the overall look and feel of the room.

Spend some time hunting through yard sales and second hand shops for old frames that can be cleaned up. For this project you really do not need to have matching items. You could even look through your local home supply store for different sizes and shapes and colors of photo frames. The final effect will be an eclectic collection with the focus on the beautiful subjects within the photographs.

Working with frames that are of a variety of shapes and sizes means that a fair amount of planning is required. Start by editing your digital pictures and finding a common theme or color or changing them to all be black and white. Once the pictures all follow a theme and they are in their frames, set them out on the floor into the shape you have chosen. You may find that you have to move them around several times before they are ready to hang but it is worth the effort.

If you opt for matching your frames, the layout will be a lot easier to do. Pick bold black frames and set them out in a formal pattern with identical spacing between every picture for an aesthetically pleasing result. They could be in three rows of five frames or keep to a square of four rows of four frames. With a monochromatic frame plan, keep your photos in color for the best result.

If you select a specific theme for your wall of pictures, try to avoid using pictures only from one family occasion such as a wedding or themed party. Consider taking photographs on every family vacation and hiking trip or even just time spent in the garden. These pictures of nature and flowers make for a lovely topic and the collection can easily be added to over time.

The pleasing visual of having personal pictures and memories displayed in your home is also very personal and unique to a family. They will look attractive as well as adding the finishing embellishment to a room that is integral to the home.
