You Can Create Distinctive Home Designs Around Your Impressionist Prints

By Sarah Murphy

Some people can just look at a room and know how it should be decorated. Others have no idea and usually opt for something easy like purchasing sets from furniture stores. There are a few who would really love a living space that is original, creative, and well designed, but are novices at decorating. These individuals should take the advice of professionals who use artwork, such as Impressionist prints, as the foundations for their room designs.

Not everyone can throw out all their old furniture and start over with brand new sofas and chairs. Reupholstering and using slip covers on existing pieces can be a good option. Before anything is done however, you should decide what your favorite color palettes are and whether you like florals, stripes, or solid designs. It is often a good idea to limit the number of colors your choose for any one room. You can use accessories and the wall art to create vibrancy in your space.

When you are looking at wall art, you need to consider the color palette in the painting and decide whether or not it will be complementary in your living space. The colors don't have to be an exact match, in fact it is better when they are not. You do want them to be in the same tone though.

If you are unfamiliar with the Impressionists for example, you can look at different examples of various artists who exemplify the genre. Monet's work is very different from Gauguin's. You might find you like both of them, neither one, or prefer Gauguin's post-Impressionist sunflowers to Monet's water lilies. The feel and design of your room will be very different depending on which artist's work you decide to purchase and hang.

How you arrange art on walls will depend on the size and configuration of the space. Some rooms lend themselves to vertical works. Others become more dramatic when prints are hung horizontally at eye level. Putting a bold print over a mantel will probably call attention to the art because fireplaces are the focal point of many sitting arrangements.

You should feel free to have fun with the artwork you choose and make a statement too, if you want to. An individual who loves ballet might enjoy having Degas prints in an office or exercise room. Feminists can choose to support women artists and still pick art from the Impressionist period. The work of Mary Cassatt is a good choice.

If you live alone, you can go any direction you want with room design. For those who live with roommates, partners, and family, some consideration for the tastes of others should be shown. Involving family members in art choices will probably improve everyone's satisfaction with the final design.

When it comes to Impressionism, you will have a lot of choices and options. You could pick some of the most famous works or go with those that are lesser known. The more you know about the piece itself, the more special it will be to you.
