Steps To Proper Windshield Replacement

By Donald Watson

Driving your car with a broken windscreen can be dangerous and may cause road accidents. It is the reason why car owners in Jacksonville FL are advised to do timely windshield replacement when the glass gets damaged. It does not matter whether you have ever replaced it previously. Replacing them with new ones make you get to the road again as soon as possible.

The replacement glass for an automobile can be purchased new or be obtained from a yard owned by a wrecker in Jacksonville FL. If you decide to buy it from the latter, make sure that you check for cracks and chips with your own eyes before handing over any cash. To prevent any damages that may occur during its transportation, you should cushion the detached windshield using a duvet.

After obtaining glass, remove the plastic surrounding side plus the upper moldings correctly. Make sure you do not pry the clips holding them together because the clips are unique to the car. Having the clips on will save you a considerable amount of time but if they are unavailable, you will have to use glue to attach the moldings on the car.

Next in your replacement procedure should be to cut the urethane from the outside between the glass and the pinch weld using a cold knife. This process takes between fifteen minutes to one hour depending on the experience and the tools that are using. The urethane is simply the flexible film that allows the windscreen to move without breaking when stress is applied to it during driving.

Before putting glass into place, make the pinch weld ready first. You should do this by brushing away the dirt and oil that may have smeared on it and then later wiping it using plain water. To effectively trim off the old urethane to the required height of three millimeters use a sharp razor blade. If there are still areas covered with dust, they should be primed.

The next action in your replacement regimen should be to prime the glass using a specific primer meant to work with the urethane adhesive that you are using. The function of the primer is to prepare the glass pane. By priming, you are making sure that it will allow urethane particles. After preparing the windshield, attach the moldings before you attach the urethane.

Application of the urethane should be done using a caulking gun. This is because the gun helps you to maintain a consistent bead as you apply it. A consistent bead will ensure that there will not be any spaces that will lead to leaks after replacement. The old urethane is the most suitable material to attach your new urethane. However, you should ensure that it is clean and free from oil.

You should then place the glass onto the car. If you are not using mounting block, avoid touching the frit band with your bare hands. It is due to the fact that oil and the filth from your hand will contaminate the glass that has been already been activated. Contamination reduces the efficiency of the urethane. To avoid this use latex hand covering.
