Benefits Of Same Sex Legal Marriage And Their Contributions To Society

By Estelle Larsen

The benefits for marriage are not just meant for the couple but also for the government. Most of these advantages that the LGBT community can provide for the government are most likely overlooked. There are certain legalities, moralities, and religious aspects that are addressed regarding this situation.

Giving equal rights and recognition for same sex couples have in no way harmed and infringed the rights of other people. For it to be called equal rights, what the majority is experiencing and enjoying should also hold true for the minority in terms of same sex legal marriage. This is all about protecting the rights of people as a whole.

Massachusetts was the first state to legalize this in 2004. After that, the other states followed. These are Washington, Rhode Island, Vermont, New York, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Maine, Delaware, Maryland, California, and also with the District of Columbia.

Some are recognized as a domestic partnership or also called as civil union that is recognized by the state but not the federal government. These are in Colorado, Illinois, Hawaii, and in New Jersey. The benefits are similar but it does not qualify for federal benefits such as Tax and Social Security benefits.

Before the United States started legalizing this in some states, Denmark recognized it in 1989. Although Netherlands is the first to actually grant it in 2001. This was then followed by other countries as well including Belgium, Canada, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Portugal, France, Argentina, New Zealand, Brazil, England and Wales, Uruguay, and by 2015 it is expected that Luxembourg would follow as well.

A lot of contributions to society are being taken part by the LGBT. These are in regards to social, political, cultural, vocational, financial, and also spiritual aspects. They are a fundamental part to the growth and development of the entire nation and society as well and removing them from the whole picture would end up becoming a big loss to the nation for their contributions.

Promoting equality may not only just benefit the LGBT but also with other minorities. It promotes non discrimination which is an important aspect in reducing homophobia. Legalizing this would help communicate towards millions of other people across and outside the country that these relationships have equal value, therefore it helps prevent prejudice between intergroup and it also supports cultural diversity.

The negative and harsh impacts from discrimination, conflict, and exclusion done by the government would greatly affect the LGBT and even other minorities as well. It defeats the purpose for the growth of these individuals in order for them to foster physical, psychological, and general well being which is the priority for the development of each person to supposedly benefit the community. These impacts can cause social conflict, ill health, and psychological distress.

If these negative impacts are removed it would contribute to the better development of these individuals. Being provided with equal rights would let them focus solely on what is important which is nurturing their psychological and also their physical well being. This can give them more freedom to attain their full potential and prevents time and resources wasted from battling in attaining the basic rights. A time will come where same sex marriage would then be called as marriage.
