The first thing a sci fi reader has to have is a good imagination and an open mind. If you are sitting down to read a book about aliens, witches, or even zombies you are not going to enjoy the book if you are constantly thinking to yourself that would never happen not in a million years. Sci fi novels are so popular among all age groups simply because it takes you out of this world and into a world that you could only dream about.
However if you have an open mind, once you start reading you are sucked in, transported to a place that you would otherwise never get to see or visit simply because they only exist in books and in your imagination. People read these books for different reasons but no matter what reason you are reading the books they still do the same thing, they take you out of this world and into another.
If you read one of these books and you do not like it, then it probably has something to do with you not having much of an imagination. You have to be able to build the world and people you are reading about inside your mind. If you can't do that then you are not going to be able to enjoy reading this type of book.
If you are not an astronaut who travels in space then reading a sci fi book is your only chance to go into space and visit made up planets with aliens that may or may not be hostile. This is your only opportunity to carry on a conversation with a being from another planet. Those people out there that think reading sci fi books is a waste of time have never felt what it is like to start a book and become a protector of the galaxy defending against all killer aliens.
One misconception about people that read these books is that only nerds and guys read these books. The main thing I want to clear up about this misconception is that reading is not "uncool" and it does not make you a "nerd" because you like to read sci fi.
Girls like smart guys, they also like guys with imagination. So all of the jock guys out there that made fun of the kids in middle school and high school because they read books all the time, they probably have great girlfriends or wives that enjoy the same time of reading material.
You might even be surprised to learn how many of the other kids in school were reading the same types of books you were. The thing is though that reading is cool. It doesn't have to be a certain type of book because reading any book is cool.
People that spend time reading tend to have a higher vocabulary than the people that don't read. You learn new words every time you read a new book. So do not ever let anyone make you feel bad about yourself because you enjoy reading sci fi.
