The Composition And Description Of Film Crew Jobs

By Sally Delacruz

Production of films is a very long process that involves a lot of manpower. A lot of film crew jobs are, therefore, available for grabs in so many companies. The crew is not the same as the cast. The cast is made up of people who stand in front of the camera to enact events in the storyline of the movie. In audio productions, they provide their voices. Producers are not categorized as being members of this team; most of them are owners of the companies or own the intellectual property of their films.

Crews are made up several departments which perform varied jobs. The description of their jobs has been changing with passage of years. What was done by individuals belonging to certain departments ten years ago are not exactly the same things being done by holders of the same positions today.

Three sections which complement one another are the major elements in producing moving pictures. These sections are the post-production phase, the principal image shooting and the pre-production sessions. Every event in shooting a movie is associated with one of these 3 areas. It is equally common to divide the crew into two groups; the above the line and below the line crews.

The director is often considered as not belonging to any of the crew departments. He is in charge of the content and chronology of events in the plot of the movie. He instructs actors, organizes them and chooses the setting for every scene. He also controls other details like where cameras should be placed, the amount of light needed and all issues concerning sound.

Production is another area that makes up the film crew. It is never considered a department on its own, rather, a series of functions. It is composed of the producer and his executive producer, production manager, coordinators and assistant coordinators, several deputy directors, accounting officers and the locations management team. Together, they form the front office team.

The production office is made up of line producers and the production assistant. The line producer is in charge of liaising with their studio and the manager of production who also manages the budget of producing the movie. His job title alludes to the fact that he is available and in charge of lining up materials needed. Production assistants, on the other hand, are individuals whose responsibility is assisting the producing team with general duties.

The accounts department is also an important part in filming. Officers in this department are in charge of all financial matters. They ensure that every participant gets his/her salary, and all matters involving money are accomplished as per the budget. In Hollywood, there is a single accounting department that manages finances in all movies.

Another area in this team is referred to as locations. The leader of this group is a location manager. He/she has the duty of finding befitting settings for every scene. He/she then ensures that these settings are ready to accommodate actions. Junior staffs in this area are the location scout, assistant location manager and location deputy manager among many other members.

The final area to be discussed is the one charged with ensuring continuity. These individuals follow every occurrence in a keen manner to make sure that characters play their parts according to the plan. In case actors stray from the plan, they inform those responsible to take necessary actions.
