The Linesman Tension Load Tool

By Bonnie Contreras

People who work with power cables need to know their tools will not let them down. The linesman tension load tool is one of the tools these people rely on. Like all their other tools these workers need to be sure they are light, easy to carry but still tough and reliable.

Being a linesman is a highly specialised job. Not only do you have to have the full electrical know how and skills for the power side of the Job, you also have to have a head for heights and develop a skill for climbing. Once up there on a post or pylon the worker needs to know that his tools will not let him down.

Once a worker has climbed up a metal framework or is suspended from a pole he needs access to his equipment easily and quickly. They carry everything they need in belt pouches, or hanging from their belt and so the items need to be small, light and tough. Working in these conditions the workers can not afford faulty or weak items.

If you think of the job as maintenance it sounds straight forward until you add the treacherous weather conditions they often have to work in. Traveling the country looking for faulty or broken cables sounds a doddle, but these faults appear most once the weather changes. This means that at the worst times, these people are working their hardest.

There are not that many people who would enjoy climbing around in freezing temperatures or in high winds but these people make that their work. They take it all in their stride and never let us down when we need them most. They just consider it is what they do and get on with it.

These people also have to travel long distances around the country to get to the damaged areas of cable. Some can be very remote and hard to reach, up mountains and through rough terrain. This means that it can be a very lonely life with rare visits home to see the family. It certainly takes a special kind of person to do this job and we all owe them our comfort and warmth in the depth of winter.

it is during the hard winter frosts when cables are brought down, blizzards and high winds ripping them from their seating or pulling them apart. They can hang dangerously over rivers or roads until these people come and correct the situation. They bravely come forth in the deepest of winter mending breaks and faults, keeping the country moving and working.

It is at these times when the linesman tension load tool should be a tool to rely on. They are used for coupling broken cables while a new cable is mounted or new supports are fitted. As such they not only need to be tough but also, reliable so that every job can be completed in the optimum time.
